US Secretary of State Addresses Iran Nuclear Ambitions, Ukraine Conflict Amid Congressional Elections

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio voiced concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and commented on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, remarks made as midterm congressional elections loom and domestic criticism mounts.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has asserted that Iran has signaled its intent to pursue nuclear weapons, though he added such an outcome will not materialize. Rubio’s statements, made amidst the backdrop of midterm congressional elections and significant public and official criticism regarding former President Trump’s costly actions toward Iran, sought to contextualize the administration’s approach.

“We welcome diplomatic solutions with Iran, provided they do not threaten our national security,” Rubio stated. He further indicated that dialogue with Iran has not ceased, with President Donald Trump setting the timeline for such discussions. According to Rubio, President Trump has not yet decided on military action against Iran, but the United States possesses the necessary capabilities if such a move becomes requisite, although a peaceful resolution remains preferable.

Continuing his remarks, Rubio addressed public sentiment by noting the current global landscape, where a nation explicitly discusses the detonation of commercial vessels, drawing parallels to rhetoric from decades past. He claimed that Tehran has threatened to destroy regional energy infrastructure if its demands are not met, a posture he described as a continuation of actions against its neighbors since 1979.

The U.S. Secretary of State emphasized America’s military might, asserting that the United States remains the world’s preeminent military power with the capacity to achieve its objectives. In a separate comment, he referenced Russia’s substantial nuclear arsenal, while notably omitting mention of Washington’s own nuclear stockpile or that of Israel outside of agency oversight.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Rubio expressed uncertainty about the feasibility of achieving peace through negotiations, noting ongoing efforts to avert a deadly escalation. He highlighted Kyiv’s facing of nightly infrastructure attacks, while also mentioning an estimated 20,000 Russian casualties per month.
