German police authorities have launched a detailed investigation into an online statement claiming responsibility for a recent fire at a defense-related construction site operated by Rheinmetall at Kassel-Calden Airport. North Hesse police reported that the digital document is currently under review by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which has provisionally attributed the text to far-left extremist factions. Despite the serious scrutiny applied to the document, law enforcement officials emphasized that neither the authenticity of the text nor the identities of the suspected perpetrators have been conclusively verified thus far.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 30, 2026, at a construction site located on airport grounds. Initial assessments by security agencies indicate that three heavy construction vehicles were completely destroyed in the blaze, while several other pieces of equipment sustained significant damage. Following preliminary on-site inspections, police strongly suspect arson, prompting the transfer of the case to the state criminal police office’s specialized unit for state security and constitutional protection due to the strong possibility of political motivations.

Rheinmetall had planned to develop logistics infrastructure, training facilities, and drone-testing grounds on the affected property. Police efforts to gather further evidence and track down individuals linked to the incident are currently ongoing. Rheinmetall is widely recognized as one of Germany’s premier defense contractors and weapons manufacturers, having expanded its developmental footprint significantly in recent years to meet growing European defense demands. In August 2026, the defense corporation and the state government of Hesse jointly announced an investment exceeding 260 million euros at the Kassel-Calden Airport site, aimed at establishing a major logistics, training, and drone testing hub.
