The start of negotiations to end the Sudanese war with the mediation of the United Nations
A spokesperson of the United Nations says that the sides of the civil war in Sudan arrived in the city of Geneva in Switzerland today (Thursday) for negotiations with the mediation of this organization. It is said that these talks seek a solution for a possible ceasefire to facilitate the arrival and transfer of humanitarian aid and protect civilian lives.
According to Reuters, these negotiations are not of a direct type, and the officials of the Sudanese army and the rapid support forces, which are the two sides of the negotiations, are supposed to talk to each other through mediators.
The United Nations reported earlier this month that some 26 million people in Sudan, more than half of the country’s population, face “acute food insecurity.” The war between Sudan’s military factions, which began 15 months ago, has forced almost 10 million people to leave their homes and created famine-like conditions in parts of the country.
While the Rapid Support Forces are in control of most of the capital, central and western Sudan, the country’s army has taken control of the eastern and northern states, including Port Sudan.
It is worth noting that Saudi Arabia held talks between the two warring parties last year, but it was unsuccessful.
