Bloomberg: At Yesterday’s EU Leaders Summit, Merz Criticized Orbán
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Bloomberg wrote that during yesterday’s European Union leaders’ meeting in Copenhagen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán engaged in a confrontation.
Sources familiar with the dispute say the tension arose during discussions on how to better defend the EU against Russian threats and support Ukraine.
Merz accused Orbán of blocking progress in talks related to the EU’s security needs.
The clash reflects ongoing EU dissatisfaction with Orbán’s policies, including his repeated vetoes of Russian sanctions and opposition to Ukraine’s membership in the union. The EU is seeking to unify its defense strategy following recent airspace violations by Russia.
European Commission president Ursula von der leyen emphasized the need for a ”strong and decisive response” to drone incidents. She stated: “Every European citizen and every square centimeter of Europe must be safe.”
However, the Commission’s proposal for creating a “drone shield” as part of a wider plan to boost EU military capabilities received a lukewarm reception.
EU leaders agreed to revisit this issue at a meeting in Brussels two weeks from now.The Commission is expected to present a detailed roadmap aimed at strengthening Europe’s defensive capacity through 2030.
