Portugal’s Parliament Passes Controversial Bill ​Banning⁤ Face Coverings⁢ in Public Spaces

According to the English​ section of webangah news agency, citing Mehr News Agency and ⁢The Guardian, ⁢Portugal’s parliament has approved a bill banning face​ coverings ⁢in public spaces ‌for‍ “gender ‌or religious” reasons.

The proposal, put forward ⁢by the far-right ​Chega party, prohibits ‍wearing coverings such⁣ as⁣ the burqa‍ and niqab in ‍most‍ public ⁣places. ‍face coverings will⁢ remain⁣ permitted on⁣ airplanes, ⁢in ⁣diplomatic⁣ buildings, and religious sites.

The bill sets fines for violations ranging from 200 to ⁢4,000 euros. it still requires approval from ⁢Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who can veto it or refer it to the Constitutional​ Court ⁣for review.

If enacted, Portugal would join other European countries like Austria, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands that have partially ⁣or fully banned face‍ veils ⁢and ⁢hijabs.
