UN Condemns Execution of Sheikh Hasina

The United Nations, while emphasizing the importance of⁤ justice for those responsible for the killings during last year’s unrest in Bangladesh, has called for the death penalty to be revoked for the country’s former prime minister.

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, quoting Mehr News Agency and ⁤the United Nations data portal, ⁢the UN Office of Human Rights issued a statement responding to the death sentences handed down to Sheikh Hasina, former Prime ⁢Minister of Bangladesh, and Asaduzzaman Khan, former Home Minister. The UN reiterated its ‍firm opposition to capital punishment.These two former officials were convicted by Bangladesh’s ⁢war crimes tribunal on ‍charges related to crimes against humanity⁤ during last year’s student protests.

The ‌United Nations recalled that a report published in February 2025 revealed that around 1,400 people lost their lives‌ and thousands more ‌were injured during unrest in July and⁢ August of last year.

Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner ⁤for Human Rights, ⁢highlighted “shocking evidence of⁤ state ​violence and targeted killings” and stressed ‍that delivering justice is essential for national reconciliation in bangladesh.

The⁤ UN office ⁣of Human Rights noted that trials were held in absentia and called for full compliance with international fair trial standards as well as‍ cancellation of death sentences.It also ⁢urged all parties involved to exercise restraint.
