Lithuanian Airport Shuts Down Due to Balloon Flight Concerns

Vilnius Airport in Lithuania suspended flights Wednesday night due to concerns about balloons entering its airspace, according to reports. The incident follows increased drone sightings and airspace restrictions across Europe.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Vilnius Airport, the capital of Lithuania, suspended flights Wednesday night following concerns about several balloons potentially entering its airspace.

Al Jazeera reported the suspension, but did not provide further details.

Lithuania, a NATO member, announced in August that it had established a no-fly zone along its border with Belarus due to drone incursions.

Recently, several countries including Poland, Germany, Romania, Estonia, Belgium, and Denmark have reported drone sightings in their airspace.

Copenhagen International Airport in Denmark was temporarily closed after multiple large drones were observed in the country’s airspace.

Aircraft movements at Bremen Airport in Germany were also halted on November 3 after an unidentified drone was detected near the airport.

In recent weeks, the intrusion of unidentified drones into the airspace of various airports, including Copenhagen and Oslo, has led to temporary closures and widespread disruptions to air traffic across Europe.

European officials have warned about the activities of advanced drone networks and their broad security implications, announcing investigations into the creation of a “drone wall” to counter these threats.
