Gaza Tents Fail to Protect Against Cold and Rain as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Gaza’s emergency spokesperson Mahmoud Basal reports that tents in the strip have become completely ineffective against harsh weather and rain, with over 90% of shelters destroyed by heavy storms, exacerbating an unprecedented humanitarian disaster.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Mahmoud Basal, the spokesperson for Gaza‘s emergency and rescue operations, stated that tents in Gaza have become entirely ineffective, providing no protection against cold or rain and are no longer a reliable humanitarian solution under current harsh conditions.

Basal urgently called for the immediate start of reconstruction and the provision of safe housing to preserve the dignity and lives of Palestinians. He reported that since the onset of unstable weather systems, 18 residential buildings have completely collapsed, causing significant human casualties and material damage. Additionally, 25 citizens, including six children, have died—some due to extreme cold and others from building collapses or falling into rainwater collection pits.

Over 110 residential buildings have suffered dangerous partial collapses, directly threatening the lives of thousands of residents. More than 90% of displaced persons’ tents have been overturned or submerged due to strong winds and heavy rainfall, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe.

Basal also noted that tents in various areas of Gaza have been damaged or flooded, leaving thousands of families without temporary shelter and destroying clothing and bedding, intensifying unprecedented human suffering. Since the weather system began, rescue teams have received over 700 distress calls, including requests to save people trapped in water and address widespread collapses and damage.

In conclusion, Basal reiterated his appeal to the international community to take urgent action to provide emergency aid and meet critical humanitarian needs to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
