Taliban Sees No Obstacles to Developing Relations with the United States

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Zakir Jalali, the Taliban‘s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, declared that the 20-year period of foreign occupation was an exceptional phase in Afghanistan-U.S. relations. Beyond this period, he emphasized, no fundamental issues hinder bilateral ties.
Jalali asserted that the Doha Agreement demonstrates a significant level of pragmatism on both sides, enabling them to move beyond the past and focus on opportunities for mutual cooperation. His remarks followed a meeting in Kabul between Taliban Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad.
During their discussions, Muttaqi called for continued diplomatic engagement between Afghan and U.S. officials, highlighting potential areas for expanded cooperation. Both sides examined avenues for strengthening bilateral relations, including security and reconstruction efforts in post-war period.
Khalilzad praised the Taliban’s efforts in maintaining security and rebuilding Afghanistan since the withdrawal, signaling potential areas of alignment between the two governments.
