US Appeals Court to Review Landmark Google Antitrust Ruling

The US Justice Department and state attorneys general are challenging a federal judge’s 2024 antitrust decision that found Google maintained a search monopoly but rejected stringent remedies, with appellate review expected later this year.

According to the Economic Desk of Webangah News Agency, plaintiffs filed court documents on February 3 indicating they will appeal the controversial antitrust ruling against Google. A federal judge ruled in 2024 that Google held monopolistic power in online search, but later rejected the most severe potential remedies proposed by regulators.

The September 2024 judgment imposed only minor restrictions on Google’s search and AI-related contracts while rejecting arguments that the tech giant should be forced to divest its Chrome browser. Court records show the Justice Department and state attorneys had sought more aggressive enforcement measures against Google’s alleged anti-competitive practices.

Legal observers noted the emergence of generative AI competitors like OpenAI as new market challengers during the five-year litigation period. The US Court of Appeals is expected to hear the case later this year, with decisions typically issued about twelve months after appeals are lodged.
