Russia Warns Germany Against Nuclear Weapons Pursuit as Treaty Violation

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russia’s Ambassador to Germany, Sergey Nechayev, warned that any move by Berlin toward possessing nuclear weaponry would fundamentally violate its international obligations regarding non-proliferation.
In an interview with RIA Novosti, Nechayev underscored that such an action by Germany would represent a manifest breach of the country’s existing commitments under international treaties.
Germany’s engagement with nuclear technology dates back to the 1950s. Following the devastation of World War II, West Germany, constrained by stringent military limitations, concentrated its efforts on the peaceful application of nuclear energy. This focus led to the construction of numerous power plants throughout the 1960s and 1970s, establishing Germany as a significant producer of nuclear electricity within Europe.
The current geopolitical climate, marked by escalating friction between Russia and European nations concerning the conflict in Ukraine, is driving several European states to significantly bolster their military capabilities. Analysts have voiced concerns regarding the potential for a new cycle of arms competition, not only between Russia and European countries but also potentially among member states of the European Union itself.
