European Commission President Urges Bloc to Assume Defense Responsibility

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, declared at the Munich Security Conference that Europe must shoulder its own defense responsibilities amid shifting global dynamics and potential divergence from the United States. She emphasized the immediate need for the continent to bolster its military capabilities and execute its common defense clause.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated during her address at the Munich Security Conference that Europe must take primary responsibility for its own defense. Her comments reflect a growing concern over the evolving geopolitical landscape and potential shifts in American strategic posture regarding Brussels.

Von der Leyen asserted that the European Union must operationalize its common defense clause, stressing that this commitment gains true validity only when founded upon mutual trust and demonstrable capability. She explicitly pointed to Moscow as a genuine and present threat to the continent, intensifying the call for concerted efforts to strengthen the bloc’s defensive posture.

Furthermore, the European leader underscored the necessity of closer alignment between Europe and the United Kingdom across critical sectors, including security, economy, and the defense of democratic principles. She noted that a decade after Brexit, the destinies of the two entities remain inextricably linked.

In a direct appeal to the continent’s manufacturing sector, Von der Leyen called upon domestic automobile producers to pivot and begin the production of essential military hardware, specifically tanks, aircraft, and artillery intended for wartime scenarios.
