IAEA Chief Grossi Expresses Ambition for UN Secretary-General Role

Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has indicated his aspiration to become the next United Nations Secretary-General, advocating for a diplomatic approach over confrontation.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has expressed his desire to assume the position of United Nations Secretary-General, favoring a calm and measured diplomatic strategy over an aggressive stance.

Speaking at a press conference in Vienna on Friday, Grossi stated, “In my view, the role of the Secretary-General is not ceremonial. The Secretary-General is there to solve problems. I believe in a pragmatic Secretary-General, not someone who accuses others.”

He emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue with senior political figures, noting that if an individual is labeled a criminal, discussions cease without any resolution to the issue.

Grossi cited his mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine as an example of his approach to such matters.

Antonio Guterres’s term as the UN Secretary-General is set to conclude on December 31, 2026.

This comes amid criticism of Grossi’s performance as IAEA Director-General, with the report noting that he did not condemn the attacks by the United States and the Zionist regime on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Furthermore, it is alleged that he previously transferred Iran’s nuclear information to hostile parties illegally.
