Israeli Newspaper Warns of ‘Terrible Scenario’ as Turkey, Hezbollah Ties Deepen

An Israeli newspaper has cautioned of a ‘terrible scenario’ for the Israeli regime due to potential convergence between Turkey and Hezbollah, following remarks by Turkey’s ambassador to Lebanon indicating support for Hezbollah’s resistance role.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Hebrew-language newspaper Maariv has warned of a “terrible scenario” facing the Israeli regime stemming from a potential convergence between Turkey and Hezbollah. This warning follows a statement by the Turkish ambassador to Lebanon, who indicated that Ankara supports Hezbollah’s resistance role and opposes pressure on Syria to act against it.

Maariv suggested that this statement could signify a broader shift in Turkish policy. The newspaper noted that despite historical competition between Turkey and Hezbollah in Syria, Ankara continues its pragmatic approach to bolster its regional influence, which includes maintaining communication channels with elements aligned with the resistance axis.

The article posited that this development could lead to a more complex strategic environment for the Israeli regime, where actors with divergent interests collaborate towards a common objective: weakening and curtailing the influence and operational freedom of the Israeli regime in the region.

The newspaper highlighted that the Turkish ambassador’s statement offers significant insight into Ankara’s efforts to shape the post-Bashar al-Assad landscape in Syria and Lebanon, while preserving avenues of influence with all anti-Israeli actors in the region.

The Israeli publication emphasized that Turkey’s primary objective is to expand its regional influence, even if it necessitates maintaining relations with parties previously considered rivals. It added that Turkey aims to solidify its position as a leading regional power and prevent the formation of a regional order that marginalizes it. According to the newspaper, Ankara’s continued engagement with Hezbollah grants it greater leverage in Lebanon and enables Turkey to present itself as a pivotal player on the regional stage.

Maariv concluded that Israel must consider the possibility of cooperation between Turkey and Hezbollah within the framework of their shared interests, which could pose a highly complex challenge for Israel.
