US Supreme Court Denies Trump Appeal in $5 Million Defamation Case

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear President Donald Trump’s appeal in a case where he was ordered to pay $5 million to columnist E. Jean Carroll for sexual abuse and defamation, upholding the lower court’s ruling.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to consider President Donald Trump‘s appeal regarding a $5 million judgment against him for sexual abuse and defamation. This decision means Trump must now pay $5 million to E. Jean Carroll, a magazine columnist.

E. Jean Carroll initially sued Trump for defamation in 2019. In 2022, following the passage of a New York law that allows victims of sexual abuse to pursue civil claims for past incidents, she filed a renewed lawsuit against him for defamation and battery.

In an unusual turn of events, the second case, filed in 2022, proceeded to trial first, and a jury awarded Carroll $5 million. This is the case the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear. The initial 2019 case went to a second trial, resulting in an $83 million judgment against Trump. Including interest, Trump now owes Carroll over $100 million. The 2022 lawsuit alleged that Trump sexually assaulted Carroll in a New York department store in the mid-1990s and then defamed her by claiming she fabricated the story to boost book sales.
