UN Official Reports One Million Displaced in Lebanon Amid Ongoing Conflict

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a significant humanitarian crisis persists in Lebanon, with approximately one million individuals still displaced from their homes due to the ongoing conflict initiated in March. This alarming situation was detailed by Imran Riza, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon, during a specialized meeting held in Beirut.
Riza’s remarks, reported by Al Jazeera, underscored the extensive and concerning dimensions of the current crisis. He stated that the sustained conflict has forced a substantial portion of the Lebanese population to abandon their residences and live in a state of displacement.
Speaking at a symposium titled “Social Justice; Decent Work,” co-organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Lebanese Ministry of Labour, Riza emphasized that 1.4 million people in Lebanon currently require urgent humanitarian assistance. He issued a stark warning, asserting that humanitarian aid alone, while essential, is insufficient to resolve the current crisis, as Lebanon is grappling with a multifaceted challenge encompassing humanitarian, economic, and social dimensions.
The UN coordinator drew a connection between the ongoing crisis and the labor market, noting, “Beyond basic needs such as food, shelter, healthcare, and security, people also require income, employment, and human dignity to care for their families.” He further highlighted the precarious state of businesses and economic enterprises amid the crisis, stressing the critical importance of fostering an environment conducive to the sustainability of these ventures to protect employment and avert economic collapse.
