Oil Spill of Nearly 400 Square Kilometers Emerges Near Oman Coast
The Omani government is actively working to contain a significant oil spill, estimated to cover approximately 390 square kilometers, that has appeared near its southern coast. The incident is reportedly linked to damage sustained by a sanctioned vessel carrying Russian crude oil.
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Omani government announced on Monday that it is undertaking serious efforts to combat an oil leak in its territorial waters. The spill has formed near the Al-Hallaniyat Islands, close to the Dhofar Governorate in southern Oman.
The emergence of the large oil slick follows damage to a sanctioned ship that was transporting Russian crude oil. The vessel, identified as the Caroline Bezengi, first reported an issue on June 8th. Maritime security sources indicated that initial assessments suggest an explosion occurred on board the ship.
The affected area is substantial, with preliminary estimates placing the oil slick’s size at around 390 square kilometers.
