A powerful explosion at the Port of Rotterdam on Thursday has resulted in at least one fatality and several injuries, with authorities still investigating the cause of the blast. The incident occurred near oil storage facilities, prompting a swift response from emergency services.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a significant explosion rocked the Port of Rotterdam on Thursday, leaving one person dead and several others injured, according to the spokesperson for the Rotterdam police. The exact cause of the explosion remains undetermined, and investigations are underway to ascertain the full scope and details of the incident.

The Rotterdam police announced via the social media platform ‘X’ that the blast occurred around 11:30 AM local time on one of the roads. They further stated, “We are investigating to clarify the details, and the scene has been cordoned off.”

In a separate development, Gunvor, an energy company managing oil product storage tanks in an area adjacent to the Port of Rotterdam, reported an “incident” during maintenance operations. The company’s spokesperson confirmed that this event led to the injury of at least several individuals on Thursday morning and affirmed their cooperation with local authorities.

Local media outlets reported that intermittent power outages had occurred at the port prior to this incident. Local safety officials and police explained that ongoing investigations are seeking to determine if there is any connection between the power outages and the explosion.

The Port of Rotterdam is recognized as Europe’s largest port, featuring an oil refinery and numerous petrochemical facilities.
