Russia Denies Pressuring Iran on US Talks, Blames America for Escalation

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, stated that Moscow does not pressure Iran regarding negotiations with the United States, asserting that Tehran, as a sovereign nation, makes its own decisions. Nebenzya also assigned blame for the current tensions to the U.S. for what he described as ‘reckless and baseless hostile action.’

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russia does not exert pressure on Iran to resume talks with the United States, as Tehran makes its own decisions as an independent and sovereign country. Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made these remarks during a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York.

Responding to a question about whether Moscow uses its relationship with Iran to encourage Tehran to return to negotiations with the U.S., Nebenzya stated that Russia “does not put any pressure on anyone, neither Iran nor any other country. Iran is an independent country and makes its own decisions in this regard.”

Nebenzya also addressed the ongoing dispute, denying claims that Iran was responsible for initiating or prolonging the situation. He attributed the root cause to the U.S. and described its actions against Iran as “reckless and baseless hostile action.” He further commented, “I do not think Iran was the party that backed down from implementing agreements reached between the United States and Iran with the mediation of others. Therefore, I do not think Iran should be blamed for this matter.”

Regarding President Donald Trump’s alleged campaign to isolate Iran’s economy and impose sanctions on countries continuing to engage with Tehran, Nebenzya indicated that Moscow is accustomed to such pressures. He noted that Russia has witnessed numerous sanctions and threats aimed at isolating its economy, suggesting that it does not pay much attention to them. “I think we will overcome it. Do not worry about Russia’s economy,” he added.

When asked about Trump’s proposal to declare the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory, Nebenzya questioned the feasibility of such a move within the framework of international law. He pointed out that President Trump has made claims or proposals regarding territorial sovereignty in various parts of the world, referencing his statements about Venezuela and Greenland. Nebenzya concluded by stating that President Trump is responsible for his own words and that it remains to be seen how he intends to implement such ideas.
