Republican Senator Calls for Pentagon Chief’s Dismissal
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Senator Tom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, has called on President Donald Trump to dismiss the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, for alleged “mismanagement.” This request follows the resignation of Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll on Monday, amidst reports of prolonged friction between Driscoll and Hegseth.
Tillis, in a social media post on Wednesday, thanked Driscoll for his “leadership of the Army and service to our country” before launching a sharp critique of Hegseth. “If we had a Secretary of War who prioritized equally and had a forward-looking vision, he would fight to retain talented commanders like Dan and many other senior officers who have been forced into retirement,” Tillis stated. “Hegseth is creating a leadership vacuum at the highest levels of the U.S. military.”
Tillis, who has served on the Senate Armed Services Committee, included a link to a CBS News report in his post detailing approximately 20 military and civilian commanders who have been dismissed or resigned since Hegseth assumed leadership of the Department of Defense. The report highlights a pattern of departures under Hegseth’s tenure.
Last year, Tillis voted in favor of Hegseth’s appointment as Secretary of War, despite initial reservations. Amidst escalating controversy surrounding Hegseth’s nomination, three other Republicans broke ranks and voted against him, necessitating a tie-breaking vote from Vice President JD Vance.
In May, Tillis informed the website Politico that he believed Hegseth had provided the President with misleading information regarding the challenges associated with the war in Iran. “I am satisfied with what the President has done in Iran, but I am not satisfied with Hegseth’s involvement as his advisor on the details,” Tillis added. He continued, “I hope Pete Hegseth is dismissed because he is incompetent and does a very bad job.”
Tillis also wrote on the social media platform X, “I have never seen a more incompetent manager than Hegseth for the brave men and women who serve our country.” He accused Hegseth of being “afraid of efficiency and has resorted to fueling culture wars instead of seriously addressing national defense and the health and welfare of America’s fighting forces.”
He concluded, “I ask the President to find a new commander at the Pentagon who will preserve and strengthen America’s military capabilities, rather than diminish them.”
