UK Prime Minister Opposes Independence Referendums for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s office issued a statement on Monday declaring the Prime Minister’s non-support for independence referendums in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Conversely, the Sinn Féin party, following an agreement with the Scottish National Party (SNP) and Plaid Cymru, asserted that Andy Burnham cannot prevent the dissolution of the UK.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister, O’Neill, also stressed that Burnham would be unable to stem the tide of nationalism in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The spokesperson for Andy Burnham, in his first reaction to the self-determination declaration signed by the First Ministers of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, stated that the Prime Minister strongly believes in the unity of the United Kingdom.

According to Sky News, Burnham’s spokesperson added that the Prime Minister is committed to fostering change across all four constituent parts of the UK and holds a firm belief in this union. Instead of focusing on constitutional matters or holding further referendums, the Prime Minister will continue efforts to alleviate financial pressures on households and enhance economic security.

The spokesperson informed journalists that London is at its ‘best’ when people unite around shared values and problem-solving, rather than engaging in ‘divisive rhetoric’.

Major pro-independence parties in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland had previously announced their participation in an unprecedented joint meeting to advance their campaigns for independence and referendums. These parties convened on Monday to coordinate their efforts, as outlined in a joint statement.

The leaders of these independence movements indicated that their discussions would focus on constructive inter-party cooperation and identifying practical areas for collaboration in economic, energy, European, and international cooperation.

In their joint statement, they called upon the UK government to take action in preparing, planning, and facilitating constitutional changes in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

This meeting occurs just days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced his support for the formation of a ‘United Ireland’.
