Russian and German Foreign Ministers Meet for First Time in Four Years

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Saturday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting marks the first face-to-face encounter between the two ministers in four and a half years.

The last diplomatic meeting of this level between Russia and Germany occurred in January 2022, just weeks before the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. The current engagement signals a significant, albeit potentially cautious, diplomatic step between the two nations.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the meeting, stating that it took place at the initiative of the German side. She added that German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had requested the meeting with her Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, at the United Nations.
