Russia Urges Restraint and De-escalation in Diplomatic Standoff with Hungary

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Yevgeny Stanislavov stated that the Russian diplomatic apparatus expects Hungarian authorities to carefully weigh Moscow’s reciprocal responses to the expulsion of its diplomats and refrain from any decisions that could further inflame bilateral relations.
The senior diplomat also noted that, from Moscow’s perspective, the administration in Hungary is well aware of the scope of Russia’s countermeasures and will avoid repeating similar provocative decisions. Highlighting the official stance of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Stanislavov recalled that Budapest had previously expressed a clear disinterest in escalating diplomatic frictions.
Reiterating his optimism, the Russian official urged Hungarian authorities to steer clear of comparable actions to prevent further complications in diplomatic ties. The diplomatic crisis unfolded when Hungary ordered the expulsion of ten Russian diplomats on September 8, 2026, with Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban alleging that the individuals had engaged in activities incompatible with their diplomatic status and the Vienna Convention.
In response to the move, Moscow issued a reciprocal order on October 1, 2026, expelling a number of Hungarian diplomats from Russia. According to Stanislavov, the expelled Hungarian personnel officially departed Russian territory on October 14, 2026.
