A senior Armenian official said on Sunday that Yerevan is ready to sign a peace agreement if Baku shows political will.
According to the Reuters news agency, Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan said in December that they want to reach a peace agreement after decades of conflict, but no agreement has been signed yet. The Nagorno-Karabakh region has been the main reason for the lack of a peace agreement.
Vahan Kostanyan, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia, said that this country has the political will to normalize relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan based on the principles previously agreed between the two sides.
He said: “Now if the Republic of Azerbaijan is really interested in peace, we just have to agree to sign the agreed principles.”
Regarding relations with Turkey, Kostanian also said that Armenia wants full normalization of relations with Turkey, including opening the common border and establishing diplomatic relations.
He said that Yerevan has done the work needed to open the borders with Turkey, including infrastructure repairs, and is waiting for Ankara’s response.
On the other hand, five days after the recent two-day meeting of the foreign ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, the senior diplomat of Baku emphasized the “concrete steps” of his country to normalize relations with Yerevan. Azerbaijan Foreign Minister Bairamov said that since January 2021, Baku has taken practical and concrete steps to normalize relations with Armenia.
This senior diplomat announced that his country presented five well-known basic principles in 2022 and these principles were also accepted by Armenia.
The Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan said that this country has prepared a draft of a document and its discussions have been based on these principles and based on the standards and principles of international law for more than a year.
