The end of Gaza ceasefire negotiations; Hamas: Netanyahu does not want an agreement
A Hamas official announced that the cease-fire talks between Hamas and the mediators in Cairo have stopped without any progress. |
Bassem Naim, a senior Hamas official, told Reuters that the group had submitted its proposals for a ceasefire agreement to mediators during two days of talks and was now awaiting a response from the Israelis. There were no negotiations.
Naim said: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not want to reach an agreement and now the ball is in the Americans’ court to pressure him to reach an agreement.
Tel Aviv has refused to comment publicly on the Cairo talks. A source told Reuters earlier that the Zionist regime did not attend the negotiations due to the fact that Hamas did not provide a list of prisoners.
Naeem said it was impossible to provide the list without a ceasefire, as the prisoners are scattered across the war zone and are being held by separate groups.
The Cairo talks were seen as a last resort to achieve the first long ceasefire in the war.
Egyptian security sources said on Monday that they were still in contact with the Israelis to allow the talks to continue without the presence of the Israeli delegation. Washington, which is both Tel Aviv’s closest ally and supporter of the cease-fire talks, has said a deal approved by Israel is now on the table. Hamas has rejected this narrative as an attempt to deflect blame from Tel Aviv in case the negotiations fail without an agreement.
The United States has also asked the Zionist regime to take more measures to reduce the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, where more than 30,000 people have been martyred as a result of the attacks of the Zionist regime.
