South Korean Prosecution Indicts Former President on Bribery Charges
The Jeonju District Prosecutor’s Office in South Korea announced the indictment of former President Moon Jae-in on bribery charges, according too a report by the English section of Webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Anadolu.South Korean prosecutors have accused the former president of violating the Special Crimes Act.Additionally,Lee Sang-jik,a former legislator and founder of Korean Air Lines,has been indicted on charges of bribery and embezzlement.
yonhap reported that charges against Moon’s daughter and son-in-law have been suspended.
Moon Jae-in,72,served as South Korea’s president from 2017 to 2022. The allegations against him come as the country remains embroiled in its worst political crisis in decades following an unsuccessful military coup attempt in December 2024.
After the short-lived six-hour coup declaration, former President Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached and later removed from office by a Constitutional Court ruling. He is currently on trial for rebellion against the state.
Acting Prime Minister Han Duck-soo is currently serving as interim president.Early elections are scheduled for june 3 (Khordad 13).
