Zelensky Vows Ukraine Won’t Recognize Donbas as Part of Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared that Ukraine will not legally or practically recognize Donbas as part of Russia, emphasizing the need for robust security guarantees and ongoing negotiations for a lasting peace agreement.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, President Volodymyr Zelensky affirmed that Ukraine will not acknowledge Donbas as Russian territory, either legally or economically. There will be no free economic zone under Russian control in Donbas, he stated.

Zelensky highlighted that while the U.S. desires a swift move toward peace, Ukraine requires assurances of the peace’s quality. He noted that no ideal peace plan currently exists, and the present draft is merely a version still undergoing work.

The Ukrainian President further mentioned an agreement that security guarantees would be presented to the U.S. Congress for a vote, stating that Ukraine is nearing strong security guarantees.

Zelensky characterized the security guarantees as more than a general framework, describing them as a detailed document still requiring considerable review and work. He noted the support from both Ukraine and the U.S. for the German Chancellor’s proposal for a Christmas ceasefire.

He cautioned that if Russia rejects peace efforts, Ukraine would request long-range weaponry from Washington. The President of the European Commission noted real progress due to coordination among Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S.

French President Emmanuel Macron, in a post on X, voiced his commitment to a sustainable and deeply rooted peace in Ukraine, emphasizing that Ukraine must remain independent and Europe must remain secure. Macron added that alongside Europeans, Ukrainians, and Americans, they will strengthen convergence, military support, and robust security guarantees.
