Pakistan Foreign Minister Details Iran-US Negotiations Amidst Strained Geopolitics

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, has revealed key details of the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States, emphasizing a diplomatic resolution to crises and progress on uranium enrichment levels.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, stated in an interview with Al Arabiya and Al Hadath that Iran and the United States have concluded that diplomacy holds the key to resolving crises.

He elaborated that they have reached a successful stage, particularly concerning the US’s request for Iran’s uranium reserves, leading to an agreement on reducing enrichment levels while keeping the reserves underground.

The Pakistani Foreign Minister asserted that the uranium reserves issue could be resolved within one of the three technical groups involved. He highlighted Pakistan’s success in facilitating the first meeting between the US and Iran in 47 years, noting the devastating and negative economic consequences of their past conflicts.

Dar explained that three technical groups are engaged in discussions concerning the nuclear file, blocked assets, and Lebanon. He stressed the need to restore the situation in the Strait of Hormuz to pre-conflict conditions, with no tariffs to be imposed for a 60-day period, allowing ships to transit freely.

The Foreign Minister added that China also supports the free and tariff-free passage of ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Currently, ships can navigate in both directions, with only service-related fees applicable. He also called for an end to Israel’s provocative attacks on Lebanon and mentioned an agreement with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey to reactivate efforts regarding the Gaza Strip.

He further indicated that then-President Donald Trump personally oversaw the negotiations, expressing hope for a positive progression. Dar’s assessment is that the next phase of talks between Iran and the US will be the most challenging, but he is confident in their ability to reach a final agreement, which he believes is in everyone’s best interest, noting no negative points in their memorandum of understanding. Issues regarding sanctions on Iran will be addressed bilaterally with the United States. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and the UAE are supporting the mediation efforts. Iran has expressed satisfaction with the negotiation process and has agreed to reduce its enrichment levels.
