Yemen’s Health Sector Faces Catastrophic Crisis Amidst Sanaa Airport Blockade

Yemen’s Ministry of Public Health has warned of a deadly crisis in the nation’s health sector, citing the closure of Sanaa Airport by the US-led coalition as directly responsible for hundreds of thousands of patient deaths.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Anis Al-Asobi, spokesperson for Yemen‘s Ministry of Public Health, stated in an interview with Al-Masirah TV that the blockade of Sanaa Airport has paralyzed the country’s medical and health system. He asserted that the coalition led by the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates bears direct responsibility for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of patients.

Al-Asobi explained that the closure of Sanaa Airport is not merely a logistical obstacle but a weapon that has severed the supply chain for critical medications. He highlighted that patients suffering from cancer and children with thalassemia are now awaiting death due to a severe shortage of medicine.

He further indicated that more than 50 percent of Yemen’s health sector is dysfunctional, with a critical lack of 12 types of vital medicines for cancer patients and a severe crisis in supplying dialysis medications.

The spokesperson issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation, stating that the continued air, sea, and land blockade by the coalition comprising the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates has presented Yemen’s health sector with an unprecedented challenge.

He reported an urgent need for over 250,000 patients to travel abroad for continued treatment, such as radiation therapy, and noted that hundreds of people are dying daily due to the scarcity of medicine and treatment facilities.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health emphasized that alongside the direct damage caused by bombings, the “indirect blockade” poses the most dangerous threat to the Yemeni people’s right to life due to its extensive humanitarian consequences.
