Khalil al-Hayyeh Appointed Head of Hamas Political Bureau

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas has announced the appointment of Khalil al-Hayyeh as the head of its Political Bureau, the movement’s highest position, replacing the martyred Yahya Sinwar. The announcement was reported by Al Jazeera.

Hamas concluded its most complex and sensitive internal election in recent years by holding a second round to determine Sinwar’s successor. In the initial secret ballot, neither of the two main candidates, Khaled Meshaal and Khalil al-Hayyeh, secured the absolute majority required by the Shura Council. Consequently, a runoff election was necessary.

The newly elected leader will succeed the interim management council, led by Mohammed Darwish, which assumed control of the movement after Sinwar’s assassination in October 2024. The future leader of Hamas faces significant challenges, including managing war negotiations, rebuilding regional alliances, and determining the location of the Political Bureau following the targeting of its Doha headquarters by Israel. Additionally, Tel Aviv has issued direct threats of assassination.

Khalil al-Hayyeh was born in Gaza in 1960 and has been a member of Hamas since its establishment in 1987. He has lost several family members, including his son, in Israeli attacks. In 2007, an Israeli airstrike targeted al-Hayyeh’s family home in the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza, resulting in the martyrdom of several relatives. During the 2014 conflict between Hamas and Israel, the home of al-Hayyeh’s eldest son, Osama, was bombed, leading to the death of Osama, his wife, and their three children. Al-Hayyeh was not present at the time of these attacks.
