Trump Eyes FIFA President Infantino for UN Secretary-General Role
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, The New York Post has reported that U.S. President Donald Trump intends to nominate FIFA President Gianni Infantino to succeed Antonio Guterres as the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Sources suggest that Infantino, 56, has grown close to President Trump through his conduct during the recent World Cup, even presenting Trump with the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize last December. This move underscores a potential strategic alignment between the U.S. administration and the head of international football.
The head of the International Federation of Association Football, who has repeatedly emphasized the organization’s independence and commitment to national interests, has faced scrutiny over decisions perceived as undermining trust among member nations. For instance, issuing a red card to a U.S. player during a match has been cited as an example that could raise concerns about FIFA’s impartiality.
A source close to President Trump told The New York Post that the President believes Infantino commands universal respect and possesses a unique talent for uniting people globally. This perceived ability is seen as a key factor in Trump’s consideration for the UN leadership position.
The tenure of the current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, is scheduled to conclude at the end of December. For Infantino to secure the position, he would require the backing of 15 members of the UN Security Council, followed by confirmation from the General Assembly.
Among other potential candidates reportedly being considered are former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who may face opposition from the United States, and Rafael Grossi, the current Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
