Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri Dismisses Progress on US-Lebanon Talks

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has characterized recent withdrawals by Israeli forces as ‘insignificant,’ stating that substantive progress has yet to materialize following the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Lebanese President Michel Aoun.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has reacted to statements by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting that he would join the process if it advanced. Berri described the announced withdrawals as minimal and emphasized that the Israeli regime’s aggressions against southern Lebanon continue.

He added that what truly matters following the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Lebanese President Michel Aoun in Washington are the results on the ground, not merely the appearance or format of the gathering.

Berri stated that the key aspect after this meeting is the consolidation of a ceasefire and the implementation of withdrawals, noting that this has not yet been achieved.

Referring to the withdrawal from the town of “Zawtar al-Sharqiyyah” on Monday, he commented that this action can hardly be considered a genuine withdrawal, as the town is very small and was not entirely under full occupation. Furthermore, he highlighted that criminal operations involving the bombing of homes, residential areas, and infrastructure, as well as aggressions against residents in the outskirts of occupied villages, are ongoing.

Berri stressed that the success of the summit hinges on the realization of practical steps. He reiterated his previous assertion that tangible actions are needed to be appreciated, but these have not yet occurred.

When asked about his interpretation of the U.S. President’s remarks suggesting Nabih Berri would join the process upon observing progress from the agreement, the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament responded sarcastically and with laughter, stating, “It seems Trump understands me better than the Lebanese!”
