US Delegation Walks Out of UN Security Council Session Over French Remarks

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, tensions flared between Washington and Paris at the United Nations Security Council, leading to the departure of the U.S. delegation from a crucial session. The American team exited as the French representative began speaking, a move triggered by France’s prior characterization of the United States in relation to human rights concerns, drawing parallels with North Korea and Russia.

Dan Neiger, the Deputy U.S. Representative, stated the reason for the walkout: “One member of this council is feigning moral superiority and acting as if they are lecturing everyone on every topic, whether it’s a conflict we are still discussing today (Ukraine) or issues of peace and security, such as human rights. That is why we left the room during France’s statement.”

This diplomatic friction originated from a vote in the UN General Assembly concerning the renewal of Volker Türk’s mandate as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The United States, alongside nine other nations including Russia, North Korea, Nicaragua, and Mali, opposed the extension.

The French representation at the United Nations responded to the U.S. position by asserting that while America was once a benchmark for human rights, this is no longer the case. France contended that the U.S. is now marginalized, standing alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali, and Russia, with other nations no longer paying heed to its stances.
