Gaza Mourns 112 Family Victims in Largest Funeral Since Conflict’s Start

Thousands in Gaza attended the funeral of 112 members of the Abu Shareea family, whose remains were recently recovered from rubble after a November 2023 Israeli airstrike. The service marked the largest funeral procession since the ongoing conflict began.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, thousands of residents in the Gaza Strip gathered on Tuesday for the funeral of 112 members of the Abu Shareea (Al-Hassaneh) family in Gaza City. The remains were recently unearthed from the debris of a building that was targeted by an Israeli airstrike in November 2023.

Victim families and the Gaza Ministry of Health announced that the Israeli airstrike on a building in the Al-Sabra neighborhood, which housed hundreds of displaced Palestinians, resulted in the martyrdom of 308 members of this extended family. Despite nearly three years having passed since the attack, search operations for the remains of other victims are ongoing.

Reports indicate that Gaza’s civil defense forces, alongside dozens of volunteers, have in recent days managed to recover the remains of 112 individuals from beneath the rubble. The intensity of the explosion from multiple heavy missiles has significantly complicated the identification and transfer of bodies.

During the ceremony, the victims’ remains were placed in white shrouds and special bags. After funeral prayers, they were interred in a mass grave at the cemetery of Gaza’s martyrs in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood.

Abdullah Abu Shareea, a relative of the victims, described the attack as one of the “most horrific war crimes” against civilians and called for the prosecution of the political and military officials of the Israeli regime.

Mahmoud Basil, spokesperson for Gaza’s civil defense, stated that thousands of bodies still remain under the rubble, and a shortage of heavy equipment and machinery is creating severe challenges for debris removal and the recovery of bodies.
