Trump Erodes Republican Edge in Economy and National Security: Polls
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, CNN, citing recent polls, reported that President Donald Trump‘s political standing has weakened to the point where the Republican Party is losing its edge in two crucial areas that have consistently favored the party: the economy and national security.
A Reuters-Ipsos poll released this week revealed that Democrats and Republicans hold virtually identical views on wars, foreign conflicts, and terrorism. Following the 2024 election, the Republican Party had held an 11-point lead on this issue. Currently, 37 percent of American adults state Democrats have a better approach, compared to 36 percent who believe the Republican Party has a better approach.
A Fox News poll from a few weeks prior presented similar findings: on national security, 50% of registered voters favored the Republican Party, while 48% favored the Democratic Party. This is a notable shift from a 12-point Republican lead in January, prior to the conflict in Iran. While both recent findings are within the margin of error, the narrowing of the gap is essentially unprecedented.
Republicans have also consistently led in national security matters according to Gallup polls. Democrats have only surpassed them once in the 21st century on this issue, in 2007. In 22 surveys conducted from one year after September 11th, Democrats have led only once—again in 2007—with Republicans often holding double-digit advantages.
Regarding the economy, the latest Fox poll showed Democrats with a 9-point lead, 54% to 45%. This marks the largest Democratic advantage since 2006, when they led by 20 points. A CNN poll in May indicated a narrower division between the parties on the economy, with 35% of adults preferring Democrats and 33% preferring Republicans. This poll had previously asked respondents to choose between congressional Republicans and congressional Democrats. The last time Republicans did not hold a lead on this specific question was in 2009.
The figures in both domains suggest that Trump may have miscalculated the ramifications of initiating the conflict with Iran, as well as other contentious policies such as global tariffs. The report suggests that Trump’s handling of the war with Iran has been perceived so poorly that Americans now view Democrats as being on par with Republicans regarding issues falling within the Republicans’ traditional purview.
