Mearsheimer: Trump Understands Iran Controls Strait of Hormuz

Renowned political scientist John Mearsheimer stated that President Donald Trump is aware that Iran, not the United States, holds complete control over the Strait of Hormuz, despite persistent US claims. Mearsheimer also highlighted the failure of Trump’s administration to achieve key objectives regarding Iran.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, John Mearsheimer, a professor of political science at the University of Chicago, has asserted that U.S. President Donald Trump fully comprehends that control of the Strait of Hormuz rests with Iran, not the United States. Mearsheimer, speaking in an interview, criticized Trump’s claims as baseless, stating, “Trump never accepts defeat and always claims victory, with reality holding no significance for him.”

“He is well aware that neither he nor America has control over the Strait of Hormuz; rather, it is the Iranians who have complete command over this waterway,” Mearsheimer added. He pointed to Washington’s months of unsuccessful efforts to reopen or gain control of the Strait of Hormuz, noting, “Trump is deeply frustrated by his inability to manage the conflict with Iran.”

“His administration, with the foolish withdrawal from the Islamabad Accord, sent this document to the dustbin of history and now lacks a strategy to counter Iran’s new demands.” Mearsheimer, a prominent American theorist, enumerated four failed objectives of the Trump administration: halting nuclear enrichment, missile containment, weakening Iran’s support for the Axis of Resistance, and regime change. He emphasized that Washington has not succeeded in any of these areas.

He further commented that the nuclear issue has effectively been removed from the agenda, and Iran’s motivation to strengthen its defense capabilities has increased more than ever, despite the Islamic Republic of Iran repeatedly affirming that nuclear weapons do not feature in its defense doctrine.

In another part of his remarks, Mearsheimer described the United States’ interventionist policies in the region as an “illusion.” He stated, “The structure of our military bases in the region has been effectively devastated, and Washington’s regional alliances have been severely damaged.” He concluded, “These conflicts have not only imposed heavy economic costs on the world but have also proven that America’s social engineering policy in other countries has fundamentally been a catastrophic failure.”
