Erdogan: Reopening Strait of Hormuz a Priority; Seeks Fulfillment of F-35 Promise from Trump
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Saturday that the continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon are a cause for grave concern. He revealed that during a recent visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to Turkey, he discussed the necessity of halting the conflict against Lebanon, highlighting the vital role of the United States in achieving a ceasefire. Erdogan affirmed Turkey’s commitment to Gaza, vowing to take all necessary measures to provide support, and contrasted Hamas’s sincere adherence to its commitments with Israel’s ongoing military actions.
The Turkish President further asserted that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is a priority, as its continued closure serves no one’s interests. He acknowledged Qatar’s significant contribution to mediation efforts aimed at ceasing regional hostilities. Erdogan also pointed to the Mecca Agreement as conveying a crucial message to the global community, stipulating unified action among signatory nations in the event of foreign aggression and leaving room for future participation by other countries, potentially including Egypt.
Addressing regional dynamics, Erdogan pledged continued strengthening of relations with Kurds and defense of their rights across the region, anticipating that Syrian Kurds would also benefit from peace and stability. He assured that Syria would not be left alone and that Turkey would exert all efforts to support its stability, announcing plans for a near-future visit to the country. The President also confirmed ongoing support for Sudan, maintaining positive relations with Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and emphasized stable relations with Libya, reiterating that Turkey would not abandon the nation.
Regarding defense acquisitions, Erdogan stated that Turkey received a promise from President Trump concerning the F-35 fighter jets and is awaiting its fulfillment. He also commented on Turkey’s relationship with the European Union, suggesting that Europe appears unwilling to accept Turkey’s membership, and stated that accession to the EU is no longer a priority, predicting that Europe would be the loser if Turkey did not join.
