Lavrov Denies US Deal on Iran and Ukraine
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that the United States has never proposed a deal to Moscow wherein Russia would receive concessions or assistance in resolving the Ukraine crisis in return for Moscow’s help in settling the Iran issue. Lavrov stated that Washington understands such an approach is not compatible with Russia’s methods. He made these remarks during a roundtable discussion with ambassadors concerning Ukraine.
Lavrov commented, “I have read about these speculations that the United States will help on the Ukraine issue if Russia helps on the Iran issue. As we say, this is not a place for bargaining. Such rumors have been circulated. Our American counterparts have never proposed such a deal, and I believe they have not done so because they are well aware that engaging in such policies and political maneuvering is not our way.”
The Russian Foreign Minister expressed anticipation for developments regarding the situation in Iran, “especially thanks to the efforts of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council member states and the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
He recalled that the member states of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council and Iraq had agreed to hold a meeting in one of Oman’s cities on Monday, but this meeting has been postponed for several days.
Lavrov added, “Clearly, some are not very pleased that all the coastal countries of the Persian Gulf are interested in improving their relations with each other. But some do not like this matter; some want problems between them to be maintained and incite continued conflict, a conflict that harms civilians in almost all coastal countries.”
The Russian Foreign Minister also mentioned that Moscow discussed the current situation with representatives of Iran and Arab countries during the recent BRICS summit in India.
He continued, “We support this process in every possible way. We also support the processes underway with the participation of Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. All of these indicate a trend towards regional countries resolving their own issues independently, without relying on those who pursue their geopolitical goals from afar.”
