Egypt Rejects Saudi Proposal for Troop Deployment in Yemen
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Egypt has rejected Saudi Arabia’s proposal to deploy troops to Yemen. In its stance on the Yemen crisis, Cairo has struck a balance between ensuring shipping security in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and safeguarding its own strategic interests. The nation has refused to engage in direct conflict with the Ansar Allah movement and its regional allies.
Sources close to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar have indicated that recent discussions and communications between Egyptian and Saudi officials focused on “protecting the economic and security stability of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a vital component of its national security, with a preference for maritime, air, and intelligence tools, and emphasizing a political, negotiation-based solution to mitigate the risks of escalating conflict.”
Despite extensive economic ties with Saudi Arabia, encompassing trade, investment, remittances from Egyptian workers, and energy flows, Egypt continues to seek avoidance of being drawn into a broader regional tension. Cairo believes that entering a war against Ansar Allah could lead to an indirect confrontation with Iran, potentially triggering military responses with unpredictable consequences.
Al-Akhbar further reports that Egypt holds particular sensitivity towards “the Saudi proposal for deploying ground forces to Yemeni territory.” Egyptian officials have communicated to their Saudi counterparts that such an action would represent “a transition to a different level of military commitment with unassured consequences, especially as entering Yemen’s highly complex environment makes defining the end of the mission more difficult than executing a limited military operation.”
Cairo continues to emphasize that ending what it terms “the Ansar Allah threat in Yemen” cannot be achieved through airstrikes or naval operations. The ongoing operations, without a political path, may lead to the “reproduction or increase of the threat,” the report added.
