Italy to Ban Full Face Veils in Schools, Limit Foreign Student Numbers

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated on Sunday that her government is preparing to ban full face coverings in schools and restrict the enrollment of foreign students. Speaking at the annual gathering of the youth wing of her right-wing Brothers of Italy party, Meloni indicated that a cabinet proposal would soon be presented to cap the number of foreign students in each classroom.

The proposed legislation will also require parents of foreign students facing significant integration difficulties to learn the Italian language. Furthermore, the plan explicitly prohibits the burqa and niqab within school premises. “You must go to school with your face visible, and in Italy, no one can decide, on the pretext of real or supposed traditions, that a young woman must hide herself,” Meloni asserted.

The Prime Minister did not specify the exact number of foreign students that would be permitted per class. A research institute’s data indicates that foreign students constitute 11.6 percent of all school enrollments in Italy. Situated in the central Mediterranean, Italy experiences a high influx of migrants, making immigration a sensitive and significant issue for successive governments.
