Erdogan Calls for Abolition of UN Security Council Veto Power
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for the abolition of veto power within the United Nations Security Council, stating that such reforms should be the strategic starting point for any meaningful changes to the global body. Erdogan made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the 2026-2027 academic year and the inauguration of several educational projects, coinciding with the publication of an article he authored for Bloomberg titled “The UN Must Abolish Veto Power in the Security Council.”
In his article, Erdogan emphasized that lasting peace in today’s world cannot be achieved through isolated blocs that lack connection. He argued that recent global tragedies, including pandemics, energy crises, supply chain disruptions, and regional conflicts, have demonstrated that entrusting the resolution of global crises to a limited number of capitals is no longer aligned with contemporary realities.
The Turkish President highlighted the necessity of transforming the need for reform into a tangible roadmap, with the abolition of veto power being central to this plan. Erdogan pointed out that the UN Security Council continues to mirror the international relations structure that prevailed after World War II.
He asserted that merely increasing the number of permanent members would not resolve the issue of power concentration, but rather would reinforce the existing system. President Erdogan proposed the abolition of permanent membership in the Security Council, advocating instead for all council members to be elected by the General Assembly for fixed terms. He also suggested that countries wishing to rejoin the council should do so through elections, with the support of a majority of member states.
