South Korean President Calls for Easing Sanctions on North Korea Amid Nuclear Concerns

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated his belief that an agreement is possible between sanctions, which he deems largely ineffective, and North Korea’s continued development of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missile technology. He emphasized that despite potential unpleasantness, the world lacks a more realistic alternative.

The South Korean President estimated that North Korea is currently capable of producing, or may already be producing, an additional 10 to 20 nuclear weapons annually. He posited that once Pyongyang believes it has accumulated sufficient nuclear weapons and missiles to guarantee its survival, it might be tempted to export them for financial gain.

This statement follows a meeting in New York where senior diplomats from the United States, Japan, and South Korea reiterated their commitment to North Korea’s denuclearization. They also indicated that dialogue remains open and urged Pyongyang to resume negotiations. However, North Korea has increasingly asserted its nuclear status, describing it as irreversible.
