Lavrov Criticizes US Rejection of Iran’s Proposal, Highlights Global Imbalances
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Saturday, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, that Russia expects the next UN Secretary-General to represent the interests of all humanity, not just the privileged.
Lavrov asserted that all damages to shipping in the Black Sea stem from terrorist attacks by Ukraine. During a press conference, he further elaborated that the UN Secretariat promotes bias and double standards, with key positions occupied by nationals of NATO member states.
The Russian Foreign Minister also criticized the handling of the “Bucha incident,” citing lingering ambiguities regarding the identities of individuals shown in media images and calling for greater transparency from journalists and international organizations. The text describes the Bucha incident, which occurred near Kyiv in 2022, as a fabricated event where Ukrainian militants allegedly massacred civilians and staged scenes to accuse Russia of war crimes and disrupt peace negotiations.
Lavrov questioned why the principle of self-determination is applied to Greenland but not to Crimea. He mentioned that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres informed him that these two situations are considered distinct.
“The regrettable situation of the US rejecting Iran’s proposal is not the first instance of such behavior (from the Americans),” Lavrov said. He described the memorandum signed between Iran and the US in Islamabad as a fair agreement to which they could return.
The Russian official noted that discussions between Russia and the United States are ongoing regularly through various channels. He added that Europe is actively seeking avenues to engage in the Ukraine negotiation process initiated by the United States.
The Russian Foreign Minister further commented on the rapidly deteriorating situation in the West Bank, warning that the construction of settlements would sever the connection between Gaza and the West Bank, leaving no practical space for the formation of a Palestinian state. He observed that divisions within Palestinian ranks have yielded no positive outcomes, with no immediate hope for reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas, as Palestinians have been unable to overcome their internal disagreements.
Lavrov also referenced Venezuela, stating that claims of Maduro being a drug trafficker were used as a pretext for regime change, and that the US subsequently seized control of the country’s oil industry. He also mentioned that Iran has been accused of supporting terrorism for decades.
