Trump Administration Explores Sanctions Relief for Russia in Exchange for Prisoner Releases

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, U.S. President Donald Trump has agreed to a plan aimed at reducing economic sanctions on Russia, contingent on Moscow releasing certain political prisoners. The Atlantic magazine reported that Trump’s envoys are actively seeking avenues to lessen American sanctions and foster commercial ties with Moscow.

The report details that a few months ago, Trump’s envoy for Eastern European affairs presented a novel idea to the President designed to break the deadlock in Washington-Moscow relations. This proposal envisioned a quid pro quo reminiscent of the Cold War era: the Kremlin would free a number of political prisoners, and in return, the United States would offer a reduction in sanctions targeting the Russian economy. President Trump reportedly gave his approval to this initiative.

This new endeavor, still in its nascent stages, could simultaneously advance several of Trump’s objectives. It is seen as a potential means to reintegrate Russia into the global economy, thereby broadening the scope of Trump’s negotiations with the Kremlin beyond the intractable conflict in Ukraine.
