UN Security Council Debates Yemen Crisis Amidst Divided International Stances

The UN Security Council convened to discuss the escalating crisis in Yemen, revealing stark divisions among member states regarding the ongoing conflict and its regional implications. While some nations backed the Saudi-led coalition, others, including Russia and China, urged an immediate end to hostilities and foreign intervention.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a recent United Nations Security Council session focused on the volatile situation in Yemen highlighted the persistent issue of double standards within international bodies. Data published by the Mehr News Agency, citing Al Jazeera and other news sources, indicated that the council meeting became a platform for conflicting viewpoints.

During the session, proponents of the aggressor coalition reiterated their support for Riyadh. Conversely, key powers such as Russia and China emphasized the imperative for an immediate cessation of violence and an end to military interventions in Yemen.

Washington and Riyadh’s Unilateral Approach Ignores Civilian Casualties

The United States representative adopted a predictable stance, refraining from acknowledging the continued cruel blockade of Yemen or the civilian casualties inflicted by the Saudi-led coalition. Instead, the U.S. representative vehemently condemned retaliatory attacks by Ansarullah forces on the aggressors’ infrastructure.

In a deflection of blame, the U.S. representative accused the Islamic Republic of Iran of supporting the Ansarullah movement and called for an immediate halt to all aid to the group. Furthermore, the U.S. offered its full support to the Riyadh-backed Yemeni government and advocated for increased Security Council pressure through the implementation of Resolutions 2140 and 2216.

The representative from Pakistan echoed Saudi Arabia’s positions. Without referencing the prolonged blockade of Sanaa Airport or the coalition’s bombing of residential areas, the Pakistani representative claimed support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and security, pledging solidarity with Riyadh.

Russia Warns of Ceasefire Collapse and Humanitarian Catastrophe

In contrast, the Russian representative presented a realistic assessment of Yemen’s dire situation. Russia stated that the ceasefire, effectively in place since October 2022, had lost its efficacy, and Yemen was now facing its most severe military and political crisis in five years.

Expressing deep concern over developments in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Russian representative warned that the situation posed a serious threat to global trade security. The representative stressed, “There is no alternative to negotiations, and attempts to resolve the crisis through the use of force will drive Yemen and the entire region towards uncontrollable chaos.”

China Calls for a Joint Security Mechanism

The Chinese representative at the Security Council presented alarming statistics on the dire humanitarian situation, including thousands of deaths, injuries, and displacements. China described the Yemen crisis as being at a sensitive and worrying stage.

The representative stated that the repercussions of the conflict had extended beyond Yemen’s borders, asserting, “The use of force will never be a definitive solution to this crisis.” China also called for a comprehensive approach to establish a joint security mechanism in the Middle East to prevent Yemen from becoming a theater for regional score-settling.

UN Envoy and Somalia Emphasize Political Solution

Hans Grundberg, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen, underscored the critical juncture the country was at, stating that the only way out of the crisis was through advancing the political process.

Meanwhile, the representative from Somalia expressed grave concern over the influx of Yemeni migrants to neighboring countries, including Somalia and Djibouti. The representative urged that the country should not become a ground for proxy wars and called on all parties to move towards a sustainable political solution.
