Moscow Warns Tokyo on Espionage Under Media Guise

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow had previously cautioned Tokyo against unacceptable intelligence gathering disguised as journalism, following the arrest of a Japanese reporter in Sakhalin for alleged espionage.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia‘s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that Moscow had previously warned Tokyo about the unacceptable and destructive nature of conducting intelligence activities under the guise of journalism. Speaking in reaction to the arrest of a Japanese reporter in the Sakhalin region on charges of espionage, Zakharova stated that Tokyo’s attempts to utilize its journalists in Russia for the purpose of gathering information and undermining the country’s security are regrettable. She added that this incident would be another factor contributing to the further deterioration of Russia-Japan relations.

The Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) announced on Tuesday that it had detained a reporter from the Japanese newspaper Hokkaido Shimbun in the Sakhalin region on suspicion of espionage. According to the security agency, the reporter in question has been accused of collecting and retaining information related to Russia’s defense capabilities with the aim of transferring it to Japanese intelligence. Following his arrest, the reporter was transferred to Moscow, where a court ordered his temporary detention for approximately two months.

Japanese officials have stated that they are pursuing the matter through their country’s embassy in Moscow and have called for humane and fair treatment of their detained citizen.
