Trump Administration Prepares Afghanistan Withdrawal Review Ahead of Midterm Elections

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the American daily The Washington Post, citing informed sources, reported that current and former U.S. military officials are bracing for the release of findings from the Donald Trump administration’s review of the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan. This move could bring the debate over the end of the country’s 20-year war back into focus on the eve of the U.S. midterm congressional elections.
The report indicates that the review was ordered by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and includes interviews with several senior military commanders who played a role in the U.S. troop withdrawal and the 2021 evacuation operations. Sources familiar with the matter told The Washington Post that the review’s findings might be released before the November 3rd midterm elections. However, the exact timeline for the report’s publication remains uncertain, with some sources emphasizing that planning for the release does not guarantee its timing.
The newspaper further noted that the report could also recommend disciplinary actions against some military commanders involved in the withdrawal process. The Trump administration has stated that this review is intended to clarify the failures and responsibilities of decision-makers and to hold officials accountable.
The U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, coinciding with the collapse of the Western-backed government and the Taliban’s return to power, was marked by widespread chaos at Kabul Airport. In the final days of the evacuation operation, a suicide attack by ISIS near Kabul Airport resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and approximately 170 Afghan civilians.
During his 2024 election campaign, Donald Trump pledged to hold accountable the officials responsible for the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. Nevertheless, the assessment of responsibility in this matter is not confined to the decisions of the Democratic administration of Joe Biden. The Trump administration’s February 2020 agreement with the Taliban is also considered one of the factors influencing the U.S. troop withdrawal process.
