In the meantime, “Nael Al-Barghouti” nicknamed “Abul Noor” is a Palestinian prisoner, whose name is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest prisoner.

Forty-fourth year of the world’s oldest prisoner

Al-Barghouthi was first affiliated with Fatah Palestine movement, but later became a member of Hamas. In November 2023, which is the month in which we are now, Abolnoor will enter the 44th year of his captivity in the prisons of the occupation regime. He has been in enemy prisons continuously for 34 years. During the past years and during several periods of exchange of prisoners between the resistance and the occupying regime, there were many negotiations about the release of Nael al-Barghouthi, but the occupiers refused to release him every time. He was born in the districts of Ramallah and Al-Bira and spent the early stages of his life there. He completed his primary education in the same village of Kuber and went to Barzit for secondary education, but when he was preparing for high school exams, he was accused of killing an Israeli officer north of Ramallah and setting fire to a factory and bombing a cafe, along with his brother and cousin. The Israeli was arrested in April 1978 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

He is very fond of reading and other prisoners in the prisons of the Zionist regime know Abu Noor for his culture and love of history and consider him a role model. Palestinian fighters know against the Zionist enemy. Al-Barghouthi learned Hebrew and English after his release in the exchange of prisoners known as “loyalty to the free” on October 18, 2011, and began studying history at Quds University, but was arrested again and stopped continuing his studies.

Nael Barghouthi’s resistance approach

Nael Barghouthi was known for his stubbornness since his childhood and in the beginning of the Palestinian wars with the occupying regime and in 1967 when the enemy army forces entered the West Bank and reached the gate of Kobar village, while he was only ten years old, he started resistance operations and together with his brother Omar and his cousin Fakhri went to the roof and started throwing stones at the Zionists and chanting Takbeer.

After the split of the Fatah movement in 1983 and the emergence of new resistance movements in Palestine and their strong participation in the process of fighting the occupation, Nael Barghouthi and his brother became members of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). At the beginning of his youth, he joined the Palestinian resistance group with his brother, and when he was 20 years old, he was arrested on December 18, 1977 and sentenced to 3 months in prison, and 14 days after his release, he was arrested again with his brother and cousin for carrying out resistance operations and sentenced to life imprisonment. Sentenced. Nael’s brother was released in 1985 in a prisoner exchange deal, but the occupying regime did not allow the release of Abu Noor. As mentioned, Abu Noor was released from the occupation regime’s prisons in October 2011 in the deal in which the Zionist soldier Gilad Shalit was released in exchange for the release of more than a thousand Palestinian prisoners. After his release on November 18 of this year, Nael married one of the freed Palestinian prisoners named “Iman Nafi” and started his new life in the village of Kuber, but he was under house arrest and when 32 months had not passed since his release, he was arrested again on 18 In June 2014, he was arrested in the framework of the campaign to arrest many of those who were released in the trade of loyalty to Azadegan.

He was sentenced to 30 months in prison and the occupation forces refused to release him after serving the sentence. Under the pretext of the existence of a confidential file, they reinstated his previous sentence, i.e. life imprisonment. The death of Nael’s brother in 2021 due to contracting Corona was one of the other bitter events he experienced in prison, and just as he was unable to say goodbye to his parents, he was also denied the opportunity to visit his brother in his final moments.
