China and US begin trade talks in Geneva
China and U.S. Begin Trade Negotiations in Switzerland.
According to the English section of “webangah News Agency,” citing Mehr News Agency and France 24, CCTV China reported that economic officials from Beijing and Washington have begun bilateral trade talks in Geneva, Switzerland, aimed at easing the ongoing trade war.
CCTV stated that high-level economic and trade negotiations between China and the U.S. commenced on the morning of May 10 (local time) in Geneva.
As reported by Xinhua, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and top trade negotiator Katherine Tai are leading discussions with a Chinese delegation headed by Commerce minister Wang Wentao.
The trade tensions escalated after former U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on chinese imports, prompting Beijing to retaliate with counter-tariffs in a tit-for-tat exchange. Currently, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods stand at 145%, while China has raised duties on American imports to 125%.
