Symbolic Voyage: ‘Madelin’ Ship Sets Sail to Break Gaza Blockade
The webangah News Agency reports that the 18-meter-long vessel, carrying 12 international activists-including Swedish environmentalist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham-began its journey to challenge what organizers describe as Israel’s illegal blockade of over 2.4 million Palestinians in Gaza.
Before departure, crowds gathered at catania’s port waving Palestinian flags in solidarity with the humanitarian mission.Thunberg stated: “We are on a civilian mission to symbolically break gaza’s siege. If any humanity remains, we must fight for Palestine-I am here becuase it is my duty.”
The Freedom Flotilla coalition confirmed that “Madelin” carries critical aid such as infant formula, medical supplies, and relief items. The voyage through European international waters toward Palestinian territorial waters is described as fully compliant with international law.
A coalition statement warned that any interference or attack on this peaceful mission would constitute deliberate unlawful action against civilians. While the journey is expected to last one week, risks remain due to Israel’s history of intercepting aid vessels-most recently on May 2 when its drone strike disabled the “Al-Zamir” boat before it could reach Gaza.
